Knights Jump 2 Spots in MPHL Standings

The Rice Memorial Prep Knights recently traveled to Sherbrooke, QC for an MPHL crossover weekend, consisting of 5 games against league opponents.  The Knights would finish the weekend at 2-2-1, accumulating 5 league points and jumping up 2 spots in the overall league standings.

The first test of the weekend would come against Shady Side Academy, who, earlier in the year prevailed over the Knights 2-1 in OT.  This matchup would see a different result for the Knights, however, as they would pick up a decisive 4-0 victory over SSA, led by 2 goals from senior forward Pietro Baccarin (Albignasego, Italy).  The second contest of the day for the Knights would come against league #1 Lake Forest Academy, who would edge the Knights by a score of 5-2 on a late empty net goal.

Saturday’s schedule included two more league games for the Knights, beginning with a matchup against St. Francis.  Two powerplay goals would propel the Knights to a 3-2 win over the Red Raiders.  The fourth game of the weekend for Rice Memorial would come against Ridley College, in what proved to be an exciting, hard-fought battle.  Despite a well-rounded effort, including successfully killing 8 of 8 penalties, the Knights would lose an overtime heartbreaker to Ridley by a score of 2-1.  The weekend would conclude with a disappointing loss to a strong Gilmour Academy team.

Senior goalie Nico Gamarra (Fort Lauderdale, FL) was named the team player of the weekend after posting 2 wins, including a shutout.  Rice Memorial’s next contest is scheduled for Thursday, January 10th at Ulysse Prep.  The Knights won the first meeting between these two teams by a score of 3-1.
