Knights Take Spring Tournament Championship

Typically most hockey Championships are not won in May.  However, the Knights took to the ice May 19-21 to participate in the Spring Fling Tournament in Marlborough, MA.  “We wanted to look at this a couple ways,” said Rice Prep Assistant Coach Ben Pearl.  “We viewed this as an opportunity for a few guys that wanted to play from last years team the opportunity to play.  Registration for the tournament was also opened up to new incoming players as well as other potential recruits, as a way to continue to grow and develop the program and its potential players.

The Knights entered round robin play as the #2 Seed facing off against the East Coast Militia, whom they had just played and lost to the night before.  With under a minute remaining and the Knights trailing by a goal, Soph. Paulius Macijauskas netted the game tying goal with the goaltender pulled, sending the game in to overtime.  In overtime, PG Colby Audette netted the game winner off of a set face-off play in the offensive zone to send the Knights into the Championship Game!

In the Championship Game, vs. #1 Seed Springfield Kings, the Knights again found themselves down in the 3rd period, this time by a more sizable margin, 6-3.  However, the Knights battled their way back to tie the game 6-6.  After trading goals, the Knights trailed 8-7, and with the goalie pulled tied the game 8-8, once again sending it to overtime.  In overtime, PG Colby Audette was again the hero as he drove the net and a shot on the rush deflected off of his stick and in to send the Knights home with the hardware.

“Ultimately, it was a fun way to finish the weekend,” said Audette.  “It was great to get on the ice with some teammates, meet some new incoming guys, and have some fun.”
