The Rice Memorial Prep Knights have won 3 of their last 4 games, bringing their win total to 24 on the season. Their recent 4 game stretch included wins against in-state rival Vermont Academy, Appleby College, and the Middlesex Bears.
The Knights kicked off the week by hosting Vermont Academy Wednesday afternoon in the annual “Battle of Vermont”. After the first period of play, the Knights would lead Vermont Academy by a score of 1-0. Rice’s offense would erupt in the second period however, posting 4 goals by 4 different goal scorers. VA would add goals late in the second and third periods as Rice hung on to a 5-2 victory. Junior forward Julien Blouin (Lorraine, QC) led the way offensively for the Knights with 2 goals and an assist.
Rice Memorial would open weekend play with a two-game series against the Middlesex Bears on Friday and Saturday, and finish with Appleby College on Sunday. Despite posting 36 shots on Friday night, the Knights struggled to find the back of the net and fell to the Bears by a score of 3-1. Senior forward Pietro Baccarin (Albignasego, Italy) would have the lone goal. The Knights rallied the following night to beat the Bears 4-2, led by a goal and two assists from junior forward Mason Marcellus (Greely, Ontatio). Rice Memorial would finish the weekend strong against Appleby College, defeating them by a score of 4-0 in their most complete performance of the weekend. The Knights capitalized twice on the powerplay and added some scoring from the backend with a goal from junior defenseman Henrik Salonsaari (Jyvaskyla, Finland). Senior goaltender Zach Pare (Mascouche, Quebec) was credited with the shutout, picking up his third straight win on the week.
The Rice Memorial Prep Knights will conclude regular season play next weekend (Feb. 9-10) with two games at home against Bridgton Academy. Saturday night’s game will honor the Knight’s senior class.
