MPHL Kick-Off Recap

Rice Memorial Prep was excited to host the 5th Annual MPHL Kick-Off Classic in South Burlington, VT. Similar to past events, this year’s Kick Off was fast paced, competitive hockey! Fifteen of the twenty-five games played were decided by 2 goals or less. Over 200 patrons came through the doors of the Cairns Ice Arena, and 20 NCAA and/or Jr. A programs were in attendance. A few notable teams in attendance were:

UMass Amherst

St. Michael’s College

Skidmore College

Williams College

St. Anselm’s

New England College

Philadelphia Jr. Flyers

Vermont Lumberjacks

Kingston Voyageurs

Brockville Braves

Ottawa Jr. Senators

St. John Sea Dogs

Endevour Sports Group

Kemptville 73’s

The Neutral Zone

Many of the coaches and scouts said there were very pleased with the game play, pace, skill, etc…many also mentioned that the teams seemed to be more evenly matched than in past seasons.

Stanstead, LFA, and Ridley set the tone early going 4-1 on the weekend. They seem to have a great mix of key returners and new players that play a skilled game and fill the back of the net. St. Francis and Gilmour are not far behind going 3-2. Both teams rely on strong goaltending and defense to play a tight checking game. Edge School’s weekend finished on a tough note with 3-1 loss to St. Francis, but their 2-3 record isn’t indicative of their balanced attack. St. Michael’s finished the weekend a little banged up but finds themselves in the thick of it going 2-3. Loyola, Shady Side and Rice have their work cut out for them, after a 1-4 start. However, all teams are very much in the mix after a very competitive weekend. A couple bounces either way could have put any of these teams with a winning record on the weekend. This seems to be the most balanced the league has been in the past four years. There are no easy games and no guaranteed wins. It looks to be another solid season in the MPHL!
